Back when women’s liberation was really starting to flex its muscles in the early 1970s, anxious conservatives warned that letting women into men’s-only bars and high-paying jobs could only result in the feminization of America. The spectacle of males in beads, long hair, and patchouli was just the beginning; soon, men would be whining about their feelings and doing all the child care, and civilization as we know it would collapse into rubble.

A quarter-century later, the wage differential still stands and civilization keeps tottering along, but disturbing evidence that those pundits may have had a point is all over Tony Scott’s remake of the 1974 thriller The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.

The original film, directed by Joseph Sargent (whose credits were mainly in television), tells a straightforward, suspenseful tale about the hijacking of a New York City subway train. It was made at a time when the city was sliding into insolvency and the nation into chaos, the era of Watergate, the Symbionese Liberation Army, and Billie Jean King trouncing Bobby Riggs. And its portrayal of New York as a world coming undone is what makes the ‘74 film sing. In the first Pelham One Two Three, the Big Apple is a grimy, dysfunctional, foul-mouthed place where men rage against the women infiltrating police and the transit workforce, race tensions bubble just below the surface, and everyone’s emotional temperature ranges from dyspeptic to apoplectic.

The good guy was the endearingly rumpled Walter Matthau as Zach Garber, a transit cop who gets embroiled in the hijack drama. Garber shares his colleagues’ mistrust of change; he derides some visiting Japanese colleagues as “monkeys,” and is shocked when the police lieutenant he’s been talking to over the radio turns out to be black. But Garber’s also committed to doing his job without heroics, and therein lies his heroism. The leader of the hijackers, played by an icy Robert Shaw, stays focused on getting the job done, too. One may be a bit of a Neanderthal, the other a sociopath, but the two leads function like grown-ups.

But there’s no place for men of the old school in Tony Scott’s empty-calorie, feel-good, modern Hollywood remake of this classic. Instead, hero and villain are two bruised psyches turning to each other for healing, as one more action picture adopts focus-group formulas that dictate a Frankenstein stitching-together of car chases, gunfire, and women’s-weeper bathos.

The setup for the hijacking, which in the 1974 edition was a slow build filling the first quarter of the movie, gets rushed through in the credits, like the opening teaser in a weekly TV drama. That leaves plenty of time for fancy-pants camera work, roaring motorcycles, and spattering blood. Additional screen minutes are devoted to building up back stories for the film’s primary antagonists, the better to embroil them in a love-hate pas de deux.

John Travolta plays Ryder, the hijacking ringleader, as a sadistic chatterbox for whom the subway caper seems mainly a pretext for showing off and messing with other people’s heads. His foil, Garber, is a disgraced and demoted subway executive, portrayed by a chubbed-up Denzel Washington with actorly modesty as ostentatious as Travolta’s flamboyance.

In 2009, it’s not enough for Garber to save the city. He also has to suffer and be redeemed, a blockbuster cliché that by now is so tired not even Washington can make it fresh. The new Garber is less a functioning adult than a guilt-wracked zhlub who stands around yammering on his cell to his wife about their kid’s soccer game while precious minutes tick down to the hijackers’ literal deadline. He’s like some Rush Limbaugh parody of a feminazi’s pussy-whipped houseboy. As he heads to the final face-off with Ryder, his wife squawks at him, “Don’t forget to pick up a gallon of milk!”

Presumably we’re supposed to feel he’s reclaimed his soul, and his balls, when he jumps around the train tracks waving a gun like a superhero. In movies like this, redemption comes cheap: you just have to kill the bad guy. In the 1974 version, Garber never fired his gun; cracking the case was all the validation he needed. If he had a wife, he kept it to himself. In 2009, our hero gets a commendation from the mayor, along with a get-out-of-jail-free card, before hurrying home to appease the little woman with that milk while sentimental strings swell in the background. It’s like watching John McCain try to win the “women’s vote” by yoking himself to Sarah Palin. Has heroism been reduced to this?

Where feminization really takes its toll, however, is on the other side of the hero/villain dance card. John Travolta, decked out in pointy sideburns and prison neck tattoo, makes Ryder a prancing leather queen who purrs to Garber, “You may be the last friend I ever make,” and rhapsodizes about his physical allure. In prison, he muses, “I’d make him my bitch.” Their cat-and-mouse courtship climaxes in a final confrontation wherein Ryder begs Garber to drill him—with a bullet, naturally, this being a family picture, but you’d have to be blind or Republican not to register the homoerotic vibe.

This creepy love story comes packaged in tens of millions of dollars’ worth of special effects—slow-motion wizardry, swirling, soaring cameras, psychedelic blurs. They’re pretty as hell but they undercut the story; flash cards have to be dropped in reminding us that the subway hostages’ time is running out. Director Scott appears to be so enchanted with his high-tech toys and pseudo-artistic vision that he has little enthusiasm left over for the narrative that’s supposed to be the real business at hand. Only the weird sexual tension between Ryder and Garber makes this bright, shiny, soulless mechanism watchable.

What’s offensive about all this is not the movie’s odd gender politics, nor Scott et al.’s backing off from a full-on Brokeback IRT (although who wouldn’t buy tickets to that?). What irks is the remake’s blatant falseness, its lazy attempts to thrum the audience’s heartstrings, and its leaden failure to make terrorist mayhem and murder anything but tedious. To see an honest, entertaining little film turned into gussied-up, soppy schlock, to see so much money, talent, and effort expended on something so meretricious, really does make you wonder if civilization is coming off the rails after all.

Travoltas' faith, family 'solid

OCALA, Fla., April 8 (UPI) -- U.S. film stars John Travolta and Kelly Preston are keeping a low public profile, but spending time with family and friends following the death of their son.

Jett Travolta died in January of a seizure disorder. He would have been 17 on April 13.

A family friend told People.com: "They aren't secluding themselves or paralyzed. ... (Seeing them) was like old times. Nothing awkward and no topics to dance around. There were smiles."

"John is a strong man, but we want to leave him in peace," Olivia Newton-John, Travolta's "Grease" co-star and another longtime friend, told the magazine. "To lose a loved one -- it's the worst time in anyone's life."

"They're relying on their (Scientology) faith to get them through this," a source close to the family said. "Their faith is solid, and their family is solid."

Grieving celebrity couple John Travolta and Kelly Preston attempted to fly away their troubles over Easter by jetting off to Fiji and Australia.

The star and his wife have rarely left their Florida compound since the death of their son Jett at the beginning of the year, but they took a secret round-the-world flight together last week.

They spent part of Easter in Fiji and then flew to Brisbane, Australia, on Sunday for a low-key three-day stay.

The Sydney Daily Telegraph reports the couple took in a day trip to Byron Bay and dined with friends as part of their Australian vacation, before Travolta piloted their plane out on Wednesday night.

One local, Alicia Spence, got to pose for a picture with the actor while he was dining at a Chinese restaurant in the city.

She tells the publication, "He was really nice and was happy to be in a photo with us."

Lionsgate has acquired North American distribution rights to action-thriller "From Paris With Love," starring John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

EuropaCorp produced "Paris." Pierre Morel ("Taken") directed from a screenplay by Luc Besson and Adi Hasak. Besson also produced.

The project recently completed production in France. Lionsgate has scheduled the film for release on Feb. 19.

Deal marks the third collaboration between Lionsgate and EuropaCorp. Company also distribbed EuropaCorp's "Transporter 3" last November and "High Tension" in 2005.

Story involves an intelligence operative, portrayed by Rhys Meyers, in the office of the U.S. ambassador in France who's partnered with Travolta's high-ranking U.S. agent, who's been sent to Paris to stop a terrorist attack.

John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers have been making an unlikely action team as they film From Paris With Love France. Now Lionsgate has guaranteed that we Americans will get to see what on earth is going on here. The studio has picked up distribution rights to the next film by Taken director Pierre Morel, and plans to release it next year, on February 19.

The THR article doesn't explain why they're waiting so long to release a movie that's already finished, except maybe that Taken opened ridiculously well at the same time of year. In the film Rhys Meyers plays an intelligence operative partnered with an American agent, played by Travolta, to stop a terrorist attack in France.

Tony Scott's remake of the 1974 crime-thriller The Taking of Pelham 123 is edging ever closer to release but has remained largely under wraps to date. But here are new pictures of the two leads, Denzel Washington and John Travolta, as they appear in the film.

The story sees Washington's schlubby subway despatcher, Lt. Zachary Garber, cotton on to the fact that a major crime is under way under the streets of the Big Apple. The criminal behind that plan is John Travolta's Ryder, sporting a nifty hat-and-'tache combo here.

Luiz Guzman, John Turturro and James Gandolfini fill out the cast, with a script by (among others) David Koepp, who told us, "We've kept a lot from the original. I wrote many drafts to try and put it in the present day and keep all that great execution from the first one."

Kawasaki disease, a rare autoimmune illness that mostly affects young children, was in the news recently in two different stories. In the first case, the disease was linked with Jett Travolta, son of the actor John Travolta. Jett died on Jan 2 after he had a seizure. He had apparently been ill for some time and his parents said he had Kawasaki disease.

It brought the condition to the attention of the public, and was followed by news of research in Australia into how the disease behaves.

Prof David Burgner from the University of Western Australia co-led a team that studied the entire human genome in an attempt to find new genes involved in making some children more susceptible to the disease.

It was first described by Dr Tomisaku Kawasaki in 1967, and although the condition is treatable, little has been learnt since about its causes.

It presents itself as an inflammatory condition. It affects several organs including the mucus membranes, the walls of blood vessels and lymph nodes. Its many symptoms include fever, rashes, swollen feet and hands, conjunctivitis and swollen lymph nodes. Children aged six months to five years seem particularly susceptible. It can be fatal, but only one in 1,000 cases result in death. Although it is rare, Prof Burgner explained why it was important to tackle the illness.

“Kawasaki disease is an important and serious illness of preschool children,” he said. “Importantly it is the only childhood illness that damages the coronary arteries, in one quarter of untreated children and five to 10 per cent of treated children. This coronary damage may have long-term health implications, including death, angina and heart attacks in childhood and the need for coronary bypass surgery and even, rarely, heart transplant in childhood.”

In the research study Prof Burgner’s team considered genetic variation among 900 cases of the disease found in children from the US, Singapore, the Netherlands, the UK and Australia. The findings identified genes that may increase the susceptibility of some children to the disease, but further research is needed.

“Kawasaki disease is thought to be an abnormal immunological reaction to an unknown infectious trigger. There is a strong genetic component, so genes are important in determining susceptibility, as we believe all children are likely to be exposed to the trigger,” Prof Burgner said.

“Our study is the first published that has investigated the entire human genome looking for important associated genes; most studies focus on a few candidate genes. We have identified at least eight new genes that have not previously been described in Kawasaki disease and some of them seem to function together. Some of the genes are involved in cardiovascular health – the function of blood vessels and in control of the immune system.”

Identifying eight genes expands the scope of future research considerably. However, studying the entire human genome is not the biggest problem facing the researchers.

“The main issue is recruiting enough cases of Kawasaki disease, which is why we embarked on an international study. Ideally we need up to 5,000 cases to cover more of the human genome and find more of the important genes. We were very lucky to work with the Genome Institute of Singapore, who are one of the top genomics facilities in the world – this made the actual genetic laboratory work and analysis possible.”

Dr Brian McCrindle, a cardiologist from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, gave a talk on Kawasaki disease at the Arab Health Congress in Dubai in January. He believes the new findings offer potential for future research.

“The research is very preliminary and needs to be verified in other people’s work, but there are some promising leads,” he said. “Kawasaki disease can look like other diseases and sometimes it doesn’t have typical presentation,” he said.

Raising awareness is vital because the disease can be misdiagnosed, but developing a cure for any rare disease is difficult. However, Prof Burgner believes the identification of eight new genes will help with the treatment process.

“We hope that our work will contribute to the development of a diagnostic test and better treatment within the next few years, but we are not there yet,” he said.

“At the moment doctors make a clinical diagnosis, based on the rash, fever et cetera, and there is no blood test that really helps. We urgently need a diagnostic test so children are treated earlier and Kawasaki disease is not missed, so reducing the long-term heart problems.”

Finding a cure remains a possibility, though. “In Japan, for example, where one in 150 children suffer KD, it may be realistic to develop a vaccine, especially if Kawasaki disease increases the risk of atherosclerosis in later life – this is an unknown area at present,” Prof Burgner said.

He also believes that the method used in his research of analysing the entire human genome will be adopted as the way forward in studying other infectious diseases.

“Genes are known to be important in determining susceptibility to infection so it is a proven and exciting method to try and identify the important genes that make people more or less likely to get infection and once they have it, more or less likely to survive. This should lead to better prevention and treatment. I suspect tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis B and C and malaria will be the likely diseases that we will see these sorts of studies in very soon,” he said.

For the moment, however, Prof Burgner is keen to continue to develop the research path he is pursuing with Kawasaki disease. There is also the possibility of collaborating with medical professionals in the Middle East.

“We are expanding the collaborative genetics group to include Asian and other populations, aiming to work together as a scientific community to crack this mysterious disease. We would very much like to hear from anyone in your region who has an interest in Kawasaki disease and sees many patients,” he said.

Scientology mission coming to downtown Ocala

OCALA - The Church of Scientology plans to open a church and educational center in Ocala. The church bought property in downtown Ocala at 50 S.E. 1st Ave., formerly the Weiner and Argo law firm, but a spokeswoman for the church said there was no definite date for the facility to open. The church bought the property for $465,000. It's still uncertain if all of the 4,500 square feet purchased by the Church of Scientology Mission of Ocala will be utilized, said church spokeswoman Pat Harney.

Harney said there were enough inquiries about the church in the area to warrant a mission building in Ocala, she said. The facility would be for educating people about the basics of Scientology but not for advanced study. The area's best known Scientologist is actor John Travolta, who lives in Anthony.

There were weeks of parties and awards show events and it was a lot of fun, but it was also a case of sensory overload," he explained the day after he and his wife returned to their Studio City home at 3 a.m. from the post-show Governors' Ball at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.

LOS ANGELES–Maybe he didn't stand a chance against WALL-E, but for Chris Williams, an unassuming comic-strip doodler from Waterloo, Ont., going to the Oscars as a nominee was as excellent an adventure as a voyage to outer space – even if he has never worn an Armani tux.

"Growing up, I was just a kid who couldn't stop drawing comic strips," says the modest 40-year-old animation whiz kid. "I certainly never dreamed that could lead to the red carpet at the Kodak Theatre. But on Sunday night, there I was, surrounded wall to wall by A-list celebrities. It was madness, with paparazzi, blimps and helicopters."

All because of Bolt, a Disney cartoon feature about a heroic dog on a mission to get back to L.A. from Manhattan, co-written and co-directed by Williams, not to mention his footnote credit for "additional voices." He shared the nomination with co-director Byron Howard.

With all the parties he attended, Williams wasn't even aware there should have been one more: the annual poolside lunch given by Canada's consul general in L.A. to honour Oscar-nominated Canadians.

Somehow the consul general's research staff concluded that for the first time in decades, there were zero Canadian nominees and opted to skip the party. In fact, there were two people who should have been honoured: Williams and Vancouver set decorator Peter Lando, for The Dark Knight.

Sources say the consul general is hoping to make up for this gaffe by arranging a post-Oscars event in March to honour Williams and Lando (who flew back to Vancouver on Monday).

Williams, who was born in Missouri but spent almost all his first 25 years in southern Ontario (his father taught psychology courses at the University of Waterloo), moved to L.A. after graduating from the animation course at Sheridan College and being recruited by Disney.

"I love Kitchener-Waterloo and would have been content to spend my life there," he recalls. "But my mom was worried about what would become of me and she encouraged me to take the course at Sheridan."

After 13 years with Disney as a top writer and storyboard prodigy, Williams got a big break when he was asked not just to rewrite but also to direct a Disney movie about a dog.

It was his directing debut and, as he says laughingly, "I had never done anything remotely this big. I had been very comfortable in the story department. Suddenly I found myself as the director of this huge project. It was a great opportunity but very stressful. I'm 40, but I had such a young face I used to look about 12. Not any more. I really aged making this movie."

It all happened when John Lasseter, the cartoon genius behind the rise of Pixar, was placed in charge of Disney's animation studio as well, flying back and forth from Pixar HQ in San Francisco to the Disney plant in L.A.

At that point, the director of a planned film called American Dog quit over creative differences and Lasseter asked Williams to step in.

Before long, this was no longer a movie about a little brown dog stranded in the Nevada desert; instead it was the tale of an American White Shepherd (with the voice of John Travolta) who does not realize he has spent his life not in the real world but on an action TV show.

The denouement comes when the canine protagonist discovers he does not need Hollywood trickery to achieve superhero stature.

"There was a feeling this was the beginning of a whole new era for Disney, and everyone at the studio got behind it," says Williams. "I have never seen people work so hard or complain so little. This was a massive undertaking, with a crew of 450 people. It was a big thrill for me, but also tremendously stressful, unlike anything I'd ever done. But it was so rewarding to feel so much energy, commitment and camaraderie ... as if we were all trying to climb the same mountain."

"I look forward to wearing shorts and a T-shirt again," he confesses. "You know I have only two suits and two white shirts and two ties, and I had to keep rotating them for all those awards parties."

What's next? Before addressing that question, Williams is taking the next month to spend with his wife (from Ancaster, Ont.) and Harper, their baby daughter.

OCALA, Fla., March 2 (UPI) -- John Travolta and Kelly Preston have penned a letter thanking town employees in Lady Lake, Fla., for supporting them after their son Jett died in January.

The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel said town employees sent the film star couple a message of condolence following 16-year-old Jett's death of a seizure in the Bahamas.

Travolta and his wife, who own a home in Ocala, had previously been supportive of Lady Lake, donating $15,000 to tornado victims in 2007 and helping to raise another $15,000.

The Sentinel said the Travolta family sent a letter thanking the town for its "thoughts and prayers," which they said comforted them during their ordeal.

"This is a time that we've needed our friends and family more than ever and this is a time that you were there and thinking of us," said a note signed by John, Kelly and Ella Travolta. "We deeply appreciate it, but mostly for our sweet Jetty boy."

His own dream? That while having his morning coffee before walking across the runway to work, he'll click on a website for the aptly named Tailwind Estates and find a mass email from a fellow resident: "I'm heading to Bermuda for the weekend and looking for some company in the co-pilot's seat."

In fact, Phillips, 53, has a whole field of dreams and it stretches along a 4,000-foot-long former military runway in Carp, near Ottawa, where construction is about to start on a new 400-hectare, 326-home airpark later this year, similar to some 600 fly-in communities that have already taken off south of the border.

Airparks are to flying enthusiasts what golf lifestyle communities are to duffers – a place to live with like-minded people within waking and walking distance of their great love.

In Tailwind Estates, home is where the hangar is. Or will be.

Some 31 runway lots worth an average of $182,000 (with homes, they're expected to sell for anywhere from $500,000 to more than $2 million) will be connected by taxiways. That means diehard pilots will just have to stroll into what looks like a three-car garage, rev up their airplane engine and roll onto the tarmac.

"For people who love boats, living on the water is a dream. For people who love airplanes, to be able to just walk into the garage and load your stuff for the weekend at the cottage almost seems too good to be true," says Chad Wilton, 26, a third-generation pilot who runs three Bulk Barn franchises in Ottawa and has put a $5,000 deposit on a lot right at the start of the runway. He's planning to build a house and hangar with room for his Cherokee 140 and room for his dad's plane when he visits.

Well, at least that's what he's telling his wife.

"A lot of people's concern with living near an airport is noise. I've lived on Avenue Rd. in Toronto and that's noisy. They build condos up and down the 401. That's noisy. Here there will maybe be an airplane every couple of hours and most of them are quite quiet. And the whole point, anyway, is you want to know when planes are coming and going."

In some U.S. airparks, roads actually double as taxiways and planes have the right of way over cars. But that won't be the case at Tailwinds, says Phillips, who's wanted to live in an airpark since he was a teenager and first visited Florida's Spruce Creek Fly-in, a 546-hectare gated community of more than 1,300 homes with immaculately groomed lawns boasting tennis courts, boat docks, a golf course and 24-hour patrolled security.

The caution sign at the main gate says it all: Children and Adults at Play.

Actor John Travolta first made the Daytona-area community – the largest airpark in the world – famous when he built a house with a hangar for his Learjet. He has since moved to a California airpark where a carport shelters his beloved Boeing 707, which is too big to land on Spruce Creek's World War II navy airstrip.

Tailwinds is close to three golf courses. Within its gates will be tennis courts, a community clubhouse/movie theatre and a restaurant called Threshold – right where its two runways meet – where locals can chat over coffee, chart out group trips and troll for company in the cockpit.

Paradoxically, airparks continue to boom in the United States despite the economic meltdown and the collapse of the housing market. The properties, while not cheap, are unique and so in demand from aging boomers keen to live their ultimate dream that 20 more are in the works, says Dave Sclair, who raised his two children in a Seattle-area airpark and founded the Living With Your Plane Association back in the 1970s.

There are just a handful of airparks in Canada, although Sclair expects to see more over time, despite winter's chilling effect: Most U.S. airparks are in "weather destinations" such as Florida, Texas, Arizona and California.

"People don't understand when you tell them you're going to live next to an airport. The first thing they think of is Chicago O'Hare or Vancouver International," says Sclair. But they're tight-knit communities with people who tend to have a common interest – an addiction to the smell of jet fuel.

Alberta's Okotokes Air Ranch sits on a high point of land half an hour south of Calgary with a spectacular view of the Rocky Mountains. Just 10 per cent of the folks living in its 150 houses (more than 330 are planned) are pilots, says Bryce Medd, who's overseeing the development and the airport.

"It's a great community – very tranquil – and we've got everyone here from people who are aviation neutral, to aviation enthusiasts who will watch a plane taking off from their porch and say, `I'm still amazed that that damn thing can get off the ground.'"

Florida's newest airpark, the exclusive Ridge Landing, is a long-time dream of veteran housing developer John Fazzini, who describes it as "my last cattle drive" before retirement.

The first resident moved onto the site between Tampa and Orlando just a few months ago but, in time, Fazzini hopes there will be 99 executive-style houses with all the amenities of Bel-Air, from on-site concierge service to a nearby equestrian centre. He built the 3,000-foot runway from scratch on a sprawling ranch he's owned for years.

"I really created this for very selfish reasons," Fazzini says with a chuckle, "because I want to live here. What I'm doing is creating my vision for what an airpark should be."

There's just one little detail he needs to hammer out first – getting his private pilot's licence.

John Travolta’s close friend has denied any involvement in the plot to extort money from the actor. The former Bahamian Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchcombe was one of three people detained by police in connection with the alleged plot involving the Travolta family.

As well as protesting his innocence, Wilchcombe has also defended Grand Bahama's Senator Pleasant Bridgewater – who has been charged with extortion and released on $40,000 bail and has since resigned from her position. Denying any involvement in the scam, Wilchcombe - who was released by police on Friday (23.01.09) – said: “Never once, asking for anything! Never once, expecting anything! This is ridiculous and absurd. The Travolta family is suffering, it's just outright foolish.

“Never did I ask for anything, no one can say that. We had a friend in my country who lost a son. It was one single individual who tried to take advantage of the family, the Bahamian people have been very kind to the Travoltas.” Wilchcombe claims Bridgewater contacted him last week to say "someone was doing something untowards", and he passed the information onto the Travolta family’s lawyers.

He said: “She knew I was close to the Travoltas. She wanted to bring something to my attention.”

He added this was the reason he has been questioned – alongside Bridgewater and paramedic Tarino Lightbourne – by police. The plot is said to centre around John and his wife Kelly Preston’s 16-year-old son Jett, who died following a seizure in the Bahamas.

No specific details of the blackmail plot have been revealed, though it is believed to involve a photograph of Jett which someone is attempting to make public. The initial demand was reportedly for $25 million, and lawyers for the family are believed to have set up those asking for the money by pretending to negotiate.

The exact details of the plot have not been made public.

The family's attorneys Mike Ossi and Howard Butler released a statement, saying: "Regrettably, in a time of such terrible grief, there are often a few individuals who attempt to make false claims in hopes of making millions of dollars. We will never let that happen."

And there were plenty of celebrity attacks including Oprah Winfrey, Kathy Griffin, Flavor Flav and Gene Simmons. “When it comes to plastic surgery, Kanye West’s mom got better results,” she said of Simmons.

She said President Obama gave the best speeches ever as he called for change, though “that’s just what America needs, another black guy asking for change.”

Lampanelli ended on a couple of curious notes, first verbally bludgeoning some female fans who kept screaming “I love you” during a point when Lampanelli was looking for some calm so she could get “serious” for a moment.

Then, she nastily had security eject a young male fan from the building after he repeatedly called her a bad name.
Lesson learned -- Lampanelli dishes it out but she’s not going to take it.

Comedian Joe Bartnick opened, and was introduced as one of Lampanelli’s favorite comedians, though after his set it was uncertain why.

Ms Bridgewater is accused of plotting with an ambulance driver to demand the money in exchange for suppressing a document related to Jett’s treatment.

She appeared in court in Nassau on Wednesday, but was not required to enter a plea.

The document, which would have released emergency responders from liability if the family refused an ambulance, did not come into play in 16-year-old Jett Travolta’s case, Marvin Dames, the senior assistant police commissioner, said.

It is unclear why Ms Bridgewater and paramedic Tarino Lightbourne allegedly believed the Travoltas would pay to keep the document from being released.

Mr Lightbourne, who was among those who tried to revive Jett after he collapsed at the Travoltas’ holiday home on Jan 2, has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempting to extort and conspiracy to extort money from the film star.

Ms Bridgewater, who resigned her Bahamas senate after her arrest last week, is due to return to court on Feb 12.

Travolta and his wife, Kelly Preston, returned home to Florida with the ashes of their son shortly after his death.
